Sometimes, to identiify the correct parts, the machine serial number and engine serial number are needed. With these, the part number can be looked up and cross referenced.

Additionally, sometimes casting numbers on the part itself are needed. For example, John Deere water pumps typically can only be identified if the casting number on the old housing is identified.

With reference to John Deere engine parts again, the piston number, and the connecting rod numbers are needed to identify correct engine kit components. Some parts are specific and are only manufactured for identical casting numbers. Incorrect substitutions may not work.

This may seem confusing, and sometimes tedious to the non-experienced buyer. An ideal situation is for the farmer, mechanic, purchaser, or enginer to identify these numbers, with the machine specifics, and keep these on record for future parts purchasing purposes.
